“He gets to the gate, and suddenly turns around and looks straight at me. He gets this look on his face like ‘Where have I seen you before?’ A dangerous situation can develop at any time, so before he could react, I grabbed a public phone and pretended I was making a call. He was still staring at me, trying to place where he had seen me, and I knew this could go bad very quickly. The plane at the gate was deplaning its passengers, and I saw a tall, black man coming off the plane. Now, this is where it could have gotten worse. I hurried up to the man, greeted him like an old friend, took his arm, and turned him away from the suspect so he could not see the baffled look on my new ‘friend.’ As I walked away arm-in-arm with this total stranger I explained I was an FBI agent undercover. The suspect concluded I was only waiting for a passenger and went forward in boarding the plane I had identified. The FBI was waiting for him when his plane landed.

“We’re taught to evaluate a situation and make a judgment. In this case, there was no time to debate or call for help. I never saw that gentleman [the debarking passenger] again, and I wonder if he is still thinking, ‘What the heck was going on back there?’”
